After moving to a new town, I bicycled around to get to know it. About a mile in, I noticed a balled-up envelope with a piece of paper sticking out. It had a crayoned picture of a heart on it.
Hi daddy.
I miss you. We got a cat in backyard. She lets me rub her feet. Do ya have a cat where you are, in prisno?
When are you coming home? Grandma thinks you should rot for what you did to mommy, she says. But I want you home. And is mommy with you? Can she come home, too?
I hav to go, daddy. I love you.
Maya
Looking up, I realized I was outside the federal penitentiary.
