This is in response to an old prompt about whether I prefer my voice on tape or face on vidoe, but it brought up good memories that I like to flip through. In college, my freshman year, I was best friends with two girls, Ann and Ali. Ali’s roommate moved out of her dorm room for some reason I don’t remember, and one night, inspired by Fiegling from a Romanian friend and cheap wine from a fake ID, she let us take magic marker to her walls to decorate.

The day before the big day
Todays Daily Prompt asked us what we do the day before a big day, and one of the suggested “big days” was our wedding day. Since a coworker of mine is getting married this weekend, I have recently been dreamily reliving the days of my own wedding, just, like 6 months ago… (I just realized, 6 months yesterday!) and I hope she has a good a time as I did.
The week before we went to Disney to get married was stressful, but not too much. The big decisions were already made and settled, we had a wedding planner handling things in Orlando. The actual day before, my husband and I bashed around Magic Kingdom with a couple of friends. These friends had never been to Disney World before, so it was awesome to show them things for the first time.
Why didn’t we ask Harry!?!?
I read about the announcement of the second royal child yesterday to Prince William and Princess Kate, and I thought of something that occurred to me the first time: How does Prince Harry feel about all this? With every child his elder brother has, he is pushed farther and farther from the throne. I wonder if he hates that? Is he like Uncle Scar from the Lion King?
“Do you know what your sin is, Mal?” “Aw hell, I’m a fan of all seven.”
To come up with a sin that Mal Reynolds would be proud to own, that is how I read today’s prompt.
Also, there is a stage at the Bristol Renaissance Fair that has the seven sins painted on the back of it, and this sin needs to be worthy of a painting with the others.
So, a trait or behavior that I find unacceptable. Gum popping? I hate that. Malapropisms? Those kind of drive me crazy, too, especially when I hear them a lot. Small talk? My INFJ personality hates that, though I know it serves a purpose.
I think the eigth sin I would declare is snorting. I don’t mean the I’m-sick-and-I’m-doing-my-best-to-keep-up-with-it-kind-of-snorting that we all have now and again, but the I’m-too-lazy-to-blow-my-nose-so-I’m-just-going-to-suck-it-into-the-deepest-recesses-of-my-brain snorting. <shudder>
I don’t want to see that painted in Bristol, and Mal probably wouldn’t like that one, Classy Captain Tightpants, but I think that would be it.
Two songs that have made my summer
You know how songs call back memories? I love that (I mean, usually. Sometimes the memories are bad and I don’t want to see them again.)
For this summer, I think I already have my song(s). The first is “Magic” by Coldplay. I don’t know how old it really is, but it was the background music in a video about the St. Louis Renaissance Fair this year. It’s dreamy, soft and other-worldly, just like my memories of the summer and the fair.
Or, the song would be “Moyturra” by Pictus, and Irish drum and bagpipe group, kind of local. My renaissance guild leader knew about them and recruited them to play during our Celtic weekend at the Faire. They used our camp as a home base, and even performed played one of their shows under one of our covered areas when the rain was too bad. Now, whenever I hear this song, I am standing by the tree behind the crowd next to my friend Jason, and we’re both standing in the drizzle, watching this band play their hearts out, watching our glen fill with people. It was gorgeous. Go to their website and check them out!
What would your song be?
Graceless Fear
This is a writing exercise for Writing 101, in which we are asked to write about something that scares us in a style unlike our own. We were given several options
The Loss Trilogy Pt. 3
I breathed deeply the fresh woodsy air and adjusted the leather bound books of my booth. The cannon announcing the opening of Faire had already been shot, and it was just a matter of time before people started streaming through the lane in front of me. I was quickly lost in the current of old friends long unseen and patrons coming in.
During the first lull in the crowd, a man came to the register with several small notebooks with Celtic symbols etched into them; some of my newer pieces. I smiled at him, glancing at his face briefly before taking the proffered card. The receipt printed off, and as I started to lay it out to hand him, I read his name.
Running Into Myself
Maybe a week ago, there was a WordPress prompt about the different “me” I am when I’m in different situations and what would happen if two or more of my mes ran into each other.
The Life and Death of Couchsurfing
Think about an event you’ve attended and loved. Your hometown’s annual fair. That life-changing music festival. A conference that shifted your worldview. Imagine you’re told it will be cancelled forever or taken over by an evil corporate force.
How does that make you feel?
I can think something that really influenced my life, and then it changed for the worse. Couchsurfing.
CS was this awesome travel website. It was a way to get to know people in a new place and ask ’em questions, get to know shit that’s not in a travel guide, maybe meet up, and also maybe stay with them.
Midday Jealousy
Dear Midnight –
It is as a friend and colleague that I am writing you. I fear that you are taking too much on yourself as the inspiration of poets and lovers, for they all seek your company. Let me help take up some of the burden. Need I remind you that you have been stealing my sunshine (as it were) for eons? Can we not finally resolve this?
Yours, Noontime (formerly Midday)
My dearest Noontime –
How thoughtful it was of you to consider my own well-being, particularly given the work that you need to do containing the sun. We both stoke fires: your sun stokes the fire of the Earth; I cannot help that I stoke the fires of the Earth’s inhabitants’ imagination. I freely confess that the light of the pale moon in my sky depends upon your sunshine, and I thank you for it.
