Cohiba and I are getting married next year, and he and I were talking about our plans this morning. He doesn’t want to see the dress beforehand; doesn’t even want to see an idea of it, but I realized that his choice of wardrobe may change according to the dress, and I don’t want him to have regret.
We’re getting married at Disney, and I told him that one of the dresses I tried on, with surprising success, was a ball gown. That is just so Disney and princessy, and I said “That is totally not me.” He said, “What are you talking about? That is you. You love imagination and play – why do you think we have so much fun there?”
That warmed my cheeks and my heart, and it is in the spirit of love and imagination that I indulge my thoughts and seek out the pieces of art that speak to me.
One is the painting of Ophelia by Sir John Everett Mallais. I first bought it in college not really knowing the title or subject of the painting, but I was drawn to the richness of the color. So rich. I was discussing this painting with a client one time, and he said “Verdant,” which is exactly what I mean.
I love love love art in odd places – it doesn’t even matter to me if it’s good art. In Vienna, there were statues on the streets, added as an accent to a windowpane. In San Francisco, there is a neighborhood of buildings adorned by murals created over the decades. I’ve stumbled upon surprise paintings in Chicago, Iowa City, and Cuernavaca, Mexico. I love the incorporation of art in something mundane, a sign of something so alive that it just bursts out of captivity, it cannot bear restraint.
Architecture. I see this as an art form as well, though it be not created for art’s sake. I wept in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.
The work was beautiful and the detail was so profound. I imagined the artists lovingly conceiving the ideas, bending over a block of stone, the time and toil to carve one block of stone, and then affix it to the next. It took my breath away.
I also like other kinds of sacred art. Islamic arabesques. Rosaries – I love rosaries. Hindu statues.
I love merging art with God. Both are Higher Powers, and I think creating the former is a way to get in touch with the latter.
