I remember the first time I really got some insight into my learning style, my memory style. It was in undergrad when I realized that, when I try to remember something, I call it to mind visually.
To put this into practice, one night, while studying for a test, I climbed up on my bed to better see a painting hanging above it. I studied the painting while thinking about the subject. The next day, sitting over the test, I tried to call the painting to memory, hoping that I could remember answers to the test as I remembered details to the painting.
The painting didn’t work. What did work, however, was thinking about the view of my room from the height of standing on my bed, a perspective I don’t normally see. And since I was first introduced to the concept of a “mind palace,” I’ve tried to use it. So far without success, but it’s a good idea. 🙂
