I Am Doing Something

Guys.

The COOLEST thing happened yesterday.

Backstory: I don’t think I’ve talked about my current United States president too much, for fear that I would dissolve into incoherent screeches. There are many things this administration does that I don’t like, (as I would expect with any conservative administration, because I am not conservative), but the immigration practices they have implemented are beyond cruel, unethical, immoral, unjust, inhumane, and infuriating.

I am so mad.

At the end of June, I made a few signs and started to spend an hour (sometimes two) standing on a corner in the small business part of my little town on the edge of Columbus Ohio. Sometimes people join me, usually not. Usually my daughter is with me, though sometimes not. My signs say things like, “Children should be cage-free.” (People always do a double take for that one.) “Dignity for all, including immigrants.” (There is nothing dignified about the way we are acting or treating people.) “Stop Child Internment,” and “Seeking Asylum is Legal.” (Because, for the love of God, it is.)

I have been out there every week for the past four months. I don’t know if it changes anything, but I know people notice and it makes me feel like I’m doing something.

Close to the corner is a coffee shop with a little yard where Wee One can safely play, and yesterday, the owners were there with their daughters. WO went right up to them and they all started to play while I kept an eye out that all was well.

One of the older girls noticed my signs and said, “Hey! I know you!”

What?

“My teacher told me about you!”

What?!

Her teacher had her class read a book called Say Something, about speaking out when something is wrong, and her teacher had mentioned ‘a lady who stands on the corner with a sign about immigration.’

The girl said, “You see something that you think is wrong, and you’re saying something.”

*****

You guys! I was mentioned in a classroom! Of kids! Teaching the future! This is so cool! Humbling, exciting, validating… I am doing something.
