Signs You Might Be The Parent Of A One Year Old

  • You can’t say the words “cracker,” “apple,” or “banana.” She hears the mere suggestion of these treats and suddenly she is hungry and only one thing will do.
  • You spend 50% of your day crawling, either on your knees or a bear crawl. Just me?  It makes Wee One shriek with laughter, and has become my go-to tantrum diffuser.
  • “We don’t eat off the floor.” Is a statement that comes out of your mouth several times a day, as you scramble to pick up the scraps she just dumped off her plate and is bending over to eat. She won’t eat it off the plate, but from the floor, it’s awesome.
  • If you leave her field of vision for a short length of time, chances are good you have started a game of peek-a-boo. Sometimes I’m not paying attention, and I realize WO is giggling at me and hiding behind her hand, and I feel guilty for not noticing sooner and letting her hang. Fortunately, she’s forgiving about my lapse and her laugh is so gleeful when we play.
  • You find a small hand creeping down your shirt multiple times a day. I think that’s just for breastfed babies and – what? It doesn’t stop at one year? I heard about this, but it is starting to get to the point that when she’s upset, she doesn’t need to nurse, she just needs to reassure her they’re there. Then I can say “cracker” and she’s not upset anymore.

She’s the best.

Share My World – Tree Climbing And Rainy Days

I haven’t done this in awhile, but why don’t we “share our worlds?!” (I mean, outside of what we already do. Let me know how you would answer these questions, and then go back to the originally poster and let them know, too!!

Are you a traveler or a homebody?

Ooh, I’m a traveler! I love to be on the road! Check out adventures I’ve had under the travel tag!

What kind of TV commercial would you like to make? Describe it.

I think my commercial would be the top 10 trees to climb in the world. So then I would get to travel. There would be location-establishing shots with little labels on the bottom of the screen, then close-up shots of the trees, then talking to arborists about the species of the trees and their virtues, and then a smattering of shots of me climbing the tree. And then the gag reel would be me getting down, as graceful as that is.

Describe yourself in a word that starts with the first letter of your name.

I love alliteration; I can do this all day. Sassy? Sarcastic? Smart? Spirited? Super? Snuggly? Savoring? Spiritual? Studious? Steadfast?

List some fun things for a rainy day.

Sans child: Reading, writing, snuggling, watching TV, drawing, crocheting.

Avec child: Reading (different books though), playing with blocks, coloring, bouncing balls in the basement, rocking and singing by the window, crawling around like bears.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful for some talks Cohiba and I have had.

I’m looking forward to seeing friends in St. Louis next week.

“Now He Knows Who Killed Kennedy”

This past Tuesday, during the presidential election when everyone thought Hillary would win, scores of voters covered Susan B. Anthony’s gravestone  with “I Voted” stickers. The woman’s suffrage activist (I mean, suffrage for white women; not true suffrage) obviously believed women should and could vote, but could she have imagined voting for a woman president?

Weekend Coffee Share #35

IMG_2261

If we were having coffee, we would share a long hug, as it has been a long time. It’s a new shop we’re in, a new town. I have been to this shop before, outside of Columbus, and the chai is truly superb. I came here just recently, the first mom date I had with people since moving. This one went alright, but there will be more. It takes time to connect with people and find my group. I miss my friends in Seattle, and we toast to their health: Courtney, Lydia, Jenny, Midori, Beckie, Jessica, others and all the littles.

Haka

It is part of my 52/52 Challenge of 2016 to do small research projects on unexpected things that catch my interest.

Intrigued by this story, I wanted to learn more about a haka. What I knew is that it is a traditional Maori ritual, something the All Blacks do to intimidate their enemy, hence the wide eyes and tongue out. But seeing it filmed from a wedding was confusing. Were they mad because the groom wasn’t, in their eyes, right for the bride?  Then I saw him join in and match them, and then that precious forehead greeting.

Handsy Shpitzing

Here in Columbus, Ohio, toddler story time is offered four times a week. (In Seattle, it was just once. This is nicer.) When we go, they sing different songs that have little motions to them, and one of them is called “Finger Poppin’,” set to the tune of a big band tune I can’t name. As you sing, you do a little things with your fingers, like you’re trying to flick water in someone’s face. (Is that just me?)

But I have a problem with that.

Mixed CD Stories

Get a beer for this one, friends, ’cause it’s got some stories to it.  In 2004, I worked for the Missouri PIRGs (a left wing political action group) and that was a hell of a summer in Sahara’s life. I’m glad I had it, but I’m glad I’ll never have to learn those lessons again.

But, when I left, I made a mix CD for myself and some of my friends from some music we had all shared that touched on some of the warmer memories of that year, and even when I listen to it now, I still remember. I wrote about one of these songs a few weeks ago, but I want to tell you about the rest.

Won’t you come see the melodious highlight memory reel??? /insert wavy back in time lines/
