Happy and Sassy Lamby

In my guild at the Ren Fair, we’re going to make t-shirts and stuff for this year’s cast.  This past week, we were presented with the opportunity to come up with a new slogan which would require a new image. (Our guild chief got conked in the back of a head during the keg toss – and he was a good 20 feet away.) We were talking about other slogans, kind of playing on that incident (which could have been horrible but wasn’t,) and I drew a few sketches of a sheep in a kilt to work with it.

I don’t know if they will be used and I’m trying to surrender any expectations I have to that end, but it felt nice to do.  I’ve never tried to draw anything for anything other than my own enjoyment before. (Perhaps for good reason.. 🙂

I even gave them both names.

Remember the time… First kiss?

For the fair month of May, I remember my very first kiss. It was magic – the perfect first kiss for any teenage girl.

He was floppy haired and funny, and considered relatively cool among band kids. We’d been “going out” for a week, holding hands in the hallway and leaning on each other after practice.

One afternoon, he walked me home, about a mile, a mile and a half from his house. We hung out in my carpeted kitchen in roller-footed chairs, drinking Cokes. As the evening fell and his time to leave approached, the unspoken expectation rose.

Inspiration Engine 15 – Art, Music and Stories

This is a weekly post I do about blogs or posts that have inspired me in some way this week!

1. This post on I, Myself, Am Strange and Unusual, was at the top of my reader for a day or so, and I was inspired by it every time I opened wordpress. In this painting, i love the wash of color and the simple drawing, but especially the theme of circles that is pulled through each panel.

2. The second is this 2009 post from The Well-Tempered Ear in which the author cites a few stories that integrate classical music. As I was leaving from a home visit today, I was struck with inspiration to write the stories I see when I listen to classical music. Since childhood, my family put favorite TV shows on audio recording because that was all we could afford, and I regularly listed to audio recordings of Rodolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Care Bears, The Wizard of Oz, and Peter and the Wolf.

Therefore, I grew up imagining stories and scenes as I listened to music.  I created a whole story around the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack and would listen to it/tell myself the story at night when I was trying to fall asleep.

What did you find that inspired you this week?

Let us gingerly place a timid foot e’er closer

My first official stint as a real live acting Rennie approaches, and I’m sick.  I was out doing site work last Saturday, and fell sick.  In truth, I was already coming down with something, but then I didn’t hydrate properly. Bot now, just a few days out, I’m getting excited and watching Brave to prepare for me accent. As I think about the month that approaches, I realizes it will pass quickly.

Inspiration Engine 15 – Writing

Hello friends – I’ve been sick this week. Feverish headachy hard-to-breathe nose-blowey sick. (When was the last time I slept for 15 hours? And how can one woman produce so much mucus?) I, unfortunately, have not been very active in the greater blogging community. I don’t have the usual round-up of blog posts that have inspired me some way this week.

I did, however, think about writing. How I would write, how I would get better at it and closer to that publishing ambition.  I found some information on writing contest opportunities, and in lieu of  my traditional Inspiration Engine, I’m going to share the links I found.

Here Comes Sexy Us

Instead of asking myself what advice I wish someone had given me one, two, five or 10 years ago, as today’s prompt suggests, I am going to speculate about what I’ll look back on in one, two, five or 10 years and wish I had gotten.

Leave the job. To be fair, I get that one now, and have gotten it for a while now. Thanks, mom.

It’s okay to work another job that’s not “higher up” on a career ladder. Is it getting you closer to what you what to do? Then okay. Actually, I don’t know if this is true. And, unfortunately, I won’t know until after I do it and fuck up. I hate those kinds of lessons.

Write. You want to write. Don’t deny it, Sahara. Do it. Write. Here is it, 10 years later, and you still want to write.  Look back on 10 years of stories and novels. Do it.

Good tips here

A Coffee Enema – Different things work for different people. As a marathoner, I appreciate the analogy given here.

My Advice if you are starting out – Success comes after a lot of not success. Do it. Have that “not success.”  And if you say it right, “success” sounds like “sexy us.”
