Five things to be happy for

God, Higher Power, Ultimate Creator: Thank you for trees and sun and the shade they produce next to each other. Thank you for the sound of running water and the splashes on my feet and calves when I cross it. Thank you for the healing that come through those things. Thank you for my Cohiba and the love we share.

Next stage in my life: Thank you for being there.  Please wait for me.  I look forward to you. Current stage in my life: thank you for letting me grow in you.

Humor: Thank you for popping up at unpredictable times during the day.

Voice: Thank you for projecting, laughing, and revealing parts of me so I’m not alone.

Arms and legs: Thank you for hugging and cycling and stretching and experiencing the world.

Laundry, shouting, secret

I read these words, and this is the image that comes to mind:

I picture women outside by a stream, maybe under trees, vigorously cleaning laundry and chatting with each other.  There is lots of splashing and laughing.  All around them, their daughters are mingling with one another, some chasing each other and shouting challenges, and others sharing secrets and dreams.

Facebook is the new wedding ceremony?

As I’m planning my wedding, I’ve been reading lots of magazines and hearing others’ stories of their wedding day, and one thing has come through as very important: How precious it is to be surrounded by people who you (and your spouse) love and who love and support you two as a couple.  I love that idea, and have been feeling it as I”m planning. I’m especially learning that now. Continue reading “Facebook is the new wedding ceremony?”

C.S. Lewis’s advice on writing

C.S. Lewis’s advice on writing (taken from his letters):

  1. Turn off the Radio. (Stephen King says to turn off the television while Zadie Smith says to turn off the Internet!)
  2. Read all the good books you can, and avoid nearly all magazines.
  3. Always write (and read) with the ear, not the eye. You should hear every sentence you write as if it was being read aloud or spoken. If it does not sound nice, try again.
  4. Write about what really interests you, whether it is real things or imaginary things, and nothing else. (Notice this means that if you are interested only in writing you will never be a writer, because you will have nothing to write about…)
  5. When you give up a bit of work don’t (unless it is hopelessly bad) throw it away. Put it in a drawer. It may come in useful later…

Breathe in the face of anxiety

Last week, a group of Tibetan monks were creating a mandala in a Tibetan store down the street from where I work.  I was at part of the opening ceremony and then dropped in the next day to see the progress that had been made on it. Just a little background, I love this store anyway.  Like entering another world, it has a wonderful environment and is full of good energy.  When I get frustrated at work, it’s a good place to play some singing bowls and get away from homeless addicts for a few minutes. I love it there. And last week, it got even better. Continue reading “Breathe in the face of anxiety”

Akeed ragaa w law bainy w baino blad – 5 min stream-of-consciousness

I frequently listen to Indian and Arabic music; I just love it.  Unfortunately, I can’t sing along to that kind of music because I don’t know the words.

I love to sing along to things, especially when I’m in the car, especially Tina Turner. Goldeneye.

This guy in the office is such a jerk. How can he stand to be inside himself; he bitches about everything.  And can’t he pick up social cues that he talks too long?

But back to music
