My childhood home had a lot of music; my parents were both musicians. My birth father was a trumpet player, and when I was really young, I remember hearing him practice in the basement, and then bashing around church when he played for the Christmas services. I know Casino Royale on a cellular level, hearing him play it so much.

10 Songs I Never Want To Hear Again
Who doesn’t like music, right? And some songs a little more than others. Then it happens that the song that was so awesome and catchy just becomes… tired. Then sometimes, it moves from tired to eye-rolling. Finally, from eye-rolling to “Dear God, not again!” (Oh yeah, sorry this is late. Life with a baby)
This Is The Song That Never Ends
The Wee One loves music and she loves to hear me sing, which is good since I love to sing. I started singing her full name to the tune of Frere Jacques (which is something my own mother did for me when I was young) but after I finished the first verse, a scant eight lines, I started to make up more.
Your Emoting is Getting Me Excited
My weekly spark of inspiration! This week it comes in the form of a video of a ballet dancer performing to Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church.’
Cool Songs for Cool Kids (Repost)
One of the more fundamental avenues of creativity, more basic than the doodle, is the mixed tape.
Two songs that have made my summer
You know how songs call back memories? I love that (I mean, usually. Sometimes the memories are bad and I don’t want to see them again.)
For this summer, I think I already have my song(s). The first is “Magic” by Coldplay. I don’t know how old it really is, but it was the background music in a video about the St. Louis Renaissance Fair this year. It’s dreamy, soft and other-worldly, just like my memories of the summer and the fair.
Or, the song would be “Moyturra” by Pictus, and Irish drum and bagpipe group, kind of local. My renaissance guild leader knew about them and recruited them to play during our Celtic weekend at the Faire. They used our camp as a home base, and even performed played one of their shows under one of our covered areas when the rain was too bad. Now, whenever I hear this song, I am standing by the tree behind the crowd next to my friend Jason, and we’re both standing in the drizzle, watching this band play their hearts out, watching our glen fill with people. It was gorgeous. Go to their website and check them out!
What would your song be?
The Jealous Dog song
This is a fun challenge; I’ve never done something like this before!
Right now, he’s probably home snuggling with that fuzzy new pup and
Look, she’s jumping on the sofa.
Right now, he’s probably making her some juicy ham bread
‘Cause she begged for a loaf-a.
Right now, he’s probably walking with her to the dog park
showing her the fountain spray
And while he’s away…
I chewed up the corner of the shoe
That his dear old momma brought him from the bou-
Tique in Rome that she found at a meet and greet.
I tore my sharpest little paw down the side of the wall
Scratched a hole in the bed and all
Maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats.

Song Stream-Of-Consciousness
Three songs that are the most important to me
An exercise in the WordPress writing 101 exercises, just type and go for 15 minutes without stopping or editing or fixing or crossing out. So here we go.
It’s hard to pick three. The first one that comes to mind is Silent Lucidity by Queensreich. That was a big deal for me when I was a kid. When I was in eigth grade. Dad was abusive and school sucked and I was lost. That song made me feel like maybe I wasn’t so fucked up as I thought, but maybe everything else was fucked up. Maybe I was a normal reaction to a fucked up situation. I thought it was SOO deep, and I loved the voice of the woman plainly asking, “help me.” Because no one was helping me at the time.
Inspiration Engine 8 – Grunge and Writing
Inspiration Engine is a weekly post I do about blogs that have inspired something in my this week.
1. This post, “Good Music is Timeless” by Icepicks and Nukes. A thousand times yes. It’s kids today reacting to Nirvana. It’s awesome and reminds me of how I felt when I was that age, when I first heard Smells Like Teen Spirit or, even more powerful, Black, by Pearl Jam. One of the kids in the video said that rock has skewered into two waaay different directions right now, and not good ones. I’d had that observation, but couldn’t tell if that was just me getting old or what. It was nice to be reinforced. 🙂
2. This post, “On Sherlocking,” by Drew Chial, focuses on an exercise to one might to to improve their writing and their character development. In my ever so humble opinion, good character development is right under there with “good writing” on the list of things that makes a piece good. I appreciate this suggestion to flex those muscles.
What do you think of these post? Were there any that inspired you this week?
Remember the time… we learned about sex?
“One year, (at school), I didn’t know. The next year, I just knew. You go from not knowing to knowing. Or if you don’t, you act like you do.” This was the way one of my girlfriend’s learned about sex, and this is totally how I remember it, too. I had been told by my mother about where babies come from when I was young, so young that I don’t remember. But that was just the mechanics, and I was grossed out and that was that. Then, things changed.
