Weekend Coffee Share* #2

IMG_2261

If we were having coffee, the meeting would start with a long hug.  You would talk about your children recently in a car accident and currently recovering.  You would tell me about the driver who hit them and insurance woes your family is right now facing.  You would cry a little bit and I would hold your hand. You would ask me to get your mind off it, so I would tell you about  my first “mom’s night out.” An actual mom’s night out!

I had fun, but I made several rookie drinking mistakes: I mixed my liquors, I hadn’t had much to eat the day of the event, and I didn’t get something greasy to eat on the way home. At three the next morning, my head was killing me, and the Wee One needed to eat. I thought I was going to die while I fed her, and after she fell back asleep, I got sick. Cohiba took over in the bedroom with her and I slept on the couch. Ugh, embarrassing.

If we were having coffee, we would talk about our days at the Ren fair and laugh about the cast party. I would lament about the weak Ren fair in Washington and we would talk about other forms of cosplay that Cohiba and I are considering. As a Doctor Who fan, I would LOVE to dress up as a Weeping Angel, or, as a slightly older woman with pond curly hair, I could be River Song. I don’t know how I would incorporate the Wee One in it, though. Or maybe Wonder Woman, as this ties into a dream I had in my early pregnancy. I would ask you who you would want to be, and you would say something awesome.

At this point, you would decide you would like that piece of carrot cake, and when you come back with it you break off a little piece for me.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you about movie theaters up here that have “mommy and me” showings – shows when they turn down the volume and babies are welcome. They didn’t have that when your kids were babies, you said, but you took your youngest anyway, just because the older kids really wanted to see Mulan and you couldn’t get a baby sitter.

Speaking of kids, we would talk about Halloween costumes! This is my first one with a child, and you have LOTS of ideas having been through so many years of costumes.  You would tell me a story about two of the kids going as a rainbow and a pot of gold, but then they started fighting and your daughter with gold face paint started crying and got it all over her costume.

Like our time began, we would part with a long hug and you promise to come visit me in Washington soon.

Reblog: 10 Memorable ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Books

While I read these when I was a child, they really became important to me a few years ago, when a girlfriend and I would read them aloud to each other, adding our own little twists and details to the different adventures.

Since this author has passed, she and I have begun talking about taking over the task of writing books of this sort.  Perhaps not as mystery-y, but still adventure-y.

Did you like these books, reader?  What kind of adventure would you write about?

Funk's House of Geekery

Being published through the 80s and early 90s, anyone growing up in those decades have fond memories of the Choose Your Own Adventure stories. Not only were they a neat concept but they had such a massive range of titles you could find something fresh and exciting to get into, even without the re-readability of the multiple endings. On 9th November this year the original publisher and one of the main authors, R.A. Montgomery, passed away aged 78. With some 250 books available in the original series this is not a definitive list of the best 10, but 10 that I remember fondly.

You Are a Millionaire

Not considered one of the best in the series, it was unique for it’s more realistic take on the concept. While playing baseball with your friends you stumble across a satchel bag…

Ah, Ye Olde Tyme Recordings

This is in response to an old prompt about whether I prefer my voice on tape or face on vidoe, but it brought up good memories that I like to flip through. In college, my freshman year, I was best friends with two girls, Ann and Ali. Ali’s roommate moved out of her dorm room for some reason I don’t remember, and one night, inspired by Fiegling from a Romanian friend and cheap wine from a fake ID, she let us take magic marker to her walls to decorate.

Top Ten TV Shows or Movies

I’ve never done one of these, though one of the blogs I follow, The Bumbling Bookworm, puts these up faithfully.  This week, she said, the top ten topic is on T.V. Shows or Movies!  Huzzah! I feel like I can take part in this one!

And so I shall.  T.V. shows are in green, and the one movie is in orange.

1. Doctor Who. Clever writing, fantastic storytelling…

And awesome companions.

Like a challenge? You’ll love this

Like many of my fellow writers, I enjoy a good prompt.  (Sometimes the ideas swarming around in here are too much to organize, and we need a filter to streamline them!)  I found a blogger who is doing a 52 goals in 52 weeks challenge, and I’m going to copy it, do something like that.

Since we’re in the middle of April, there are 36 weeks left in the year, and I’m going to take on 36 goals in 36 weeks.  I like that number. It’s the square of 6, it has balance. So: 36/36 Challenge.

I like balance

Here are the things I’ll be doing:

No one is so rich as to throw away a friend

Daily Prompt: Why Can’t We Be Friends? – Do you find it easy to make new friends? Tell us how you’ve mastered the art of befriending a new person.

I have memories of, in my youthy youth, going to the swimming pool with my mother.  We walked in and put our things down on the plastic lounge chairs, and I said, “Okay, I’m going to go make some friends now.”  I jumped into the shallow end and did just that.

I was even cuter than this, I’m sure.

It wasn’t so easy during my adolescence, but I have a better time of it now.

I think part of that is because I know myself and my interests. I’m a social worker that cares about economics and policy. I love to travel and have done a lot of it. I’m a fangirl of such things as Sherlock, renaissance fairs and biking.  Part of it is also that other people who share similar interests or backgrounds are eager to be friends with others; it’s easy to connect with people over these things. Finally, I’m out of the house a lot – cigar bars and coffee houses, friends’ houses and on the hiking trail – I have ample opportunity to meet people.
